The Super Boat Races will come to Clearwater Beach this OctoberThe 1st Annual Clearwater Super Boat National Championship will be held on Clearwater Beach October 2nd – 4th.

Former Clearwater Mayor Brian Aungst, who is also the Race Chairman, is excited about the event coming to town “I think it’ll be a great event for the area,” he says. “It’s a family event, it’s a fun event.” He is looking forward to the races becoming an annual event, as well as getting to show off both the completed Beach Walk project on South Clearwater Beach, and the beautiful Gulf of Mexico view to incoming visitors. “It’s a great time to bring people here,” he says.

Because the Super Boat races will bring in visitors and highlight local attractions, with minimal costs, the races are expected to have a large economic impact on Clearwater. The Super Boat races have brought in $9.5 million to Sarasota in the past 24 years. Since the race is happening in October, it picks up an otherwise slow tourist season, and is followed shortly by the Iron Man competition.

The race will begin and end at Pier 60, and the 6.5 mile long route will take the participants from Pier 60 to Hurricane Pass and back. There is a $75,000 prize for the winners. Past participants in Super Boat include Chuck Norris, Bruce Jenner and Don Johnson. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium will assist Super Boat International “with the monitoring of the safety of marine life before, during and after the event.” The event is free and open to the public. Including this event, there are nine Super Boat races this year, all around the country. For more information on Super Boat, visit superboat.com
