The 4th Annual Human Rights Walkathon Will Take Place in North Straub Park, Downtown St. PeteThe 4th annual Human Rights Walkathon will take place in North Straub Park, Downtown St. Petersburg on Saturday, March 6th.

The Human Rights Walkathon began in 2007 with the purpose of raising awareness and educating about human rights. Many people find their human rights violated, simply because they do not know what they are. Basically, human rights are those rights an individual has, simply by being human. There are flagrant examples of human rights violations, such as human trafficking or the suppression of free speech during the recent Iranian elections; but there are more subtle violations of human right that occur right here in our own neighborhoods, such as domestic violence, or discrimination.

Participation in the walkathon is free. Registration for the walk begins at 9:00. The walkathon will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and will be followed by speakers and entertainment. This year’s entertainment will include performances from singer David Pomeranz and MC Lyte.

The walkathon route will be in the park, is suitable for all ages, and is wheelchair accessible.

Participating groups include the Tampa Bay Academy of Hope, The Human Rights Group, Youth of Human Rights, and the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking.
