According to his line of reasoning, why give a child a fruit roll-up when you can give him or her a piece of fruit? Only processed foods need to advertise what’s natural about them, whereas an apple speaks for itself, providing wholesome nutrition without the need for marketing hype.

Vitamins: The Good and the Bad

VitaminsThese days everyone is hunting for a bargain. But when it comes to vitamins, do you really know what you’re getting?

First, cheap vitamins are usually synthetic. Synthetic vitamins are made from coal tar derivatives and are much cheaper to produce than natural vitamins which come from food and other natural sources. There are mixed feelings about whether or not synthetic vitamins are as good as natural, but my personal opinion is that I want my vitamins to come from a food source, not a fuel source which is known to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing).

When current Executive Director Shelley Jaffe began working at the store nearly a year ago, she surveyed the store’s customers to see if they were getting all of the products they wanted. She also surveyed people who didn’t shop at the store to find out why and what they wanted as well. The results of these surveys have inspired the greatest expansion Peter Gillham’s has seen since he opened his original Clearwater store in 1979.

GillhamStore.jpgVitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (meaning it is dissolved in fat) that is produced internally by the body when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the skin. There are two forms of vitamin D produced by living creatures: D-2 and D-3.  Vitamin D-2 is produced by invertebrates, fungus and plants. Vitamin D-3 is produced by human bodies.  Therefore vitamin D-3 is generally the most commonly recommended since it is the one our bodies produce.

Why it’s Important to Balance your Calcium Intake

Clearwater, FL (February 3, 2009) -  Magnesium influences many bodily processes, including digestion, energy production, muscle function, bone formation, creation of new cells, activation of B vitamins and relaxation of muscles, as well as assisting in the functions of the heart, kidneys, adrenals, brain and nervous system. Different hormones carry different messages all over the body.

The endocrine system consists of different glands. Glands produce and release things, both inside and outside the body. Each gland in the endocrine system has a different job. The “master” is the pituitary gland.  It is the size of a pea and has several key jobs. It helps to control nervous function, controls the rest of the endocrine system and controls a few things directly having to do with childbirth and milk production. It’s definitely the boss.

Getting Your Vitamins the Natural Way -  Winston's Super Energy Booster Mix

Prior to the advent of vitamin technology, man, animals and plants got their vitamins and nutrition from unprocessed, natural and nutritious food. During the late 1940’s and late 1950’s some vitamins were manufactured in a healthy manner. Vitamin E was made from wheat germ. However, many other vitamins such as Vitamin B complexes, which were quite vital for health, were made in a manner that was quite toxic. In fact it sterilized pigs and men as well. (Many people get slightly nauseous when consuming Vitamin B complexes. Do  you think the body might be trying to communicate something?)

Today, Vitamin E is made from acetate. If you read the label on the bottle it says “L-alpha tocopherol acetate” or “dl‑alpha tocopherol acetate”. The natural form should read “d-alpha tocopherol”. What is acetate? It is film (camera film or the color film that is used to cover stage lights to produce various colored beams of lights). At one time, the largest film producing company in America was also the largest Vitamin E producer. They didn’t like the stigma that came with Vitamin E so they sold off that division of the company. However, their waste products, the little squares that were produced from the sprocket holes on the side of the film, are still being made into Vitamin E today. As you can figure out on your own, this couldn’t possibly be good for you. Vitamins B and C have similar stories. So, the point here is that it is close to impossible to purchase a clean natural vitamin that isn’t made from plastic, city sewage sludge, horse manure, or geneticallymodified corn and soy as the base organic matter.
