Art Lovers Draw “Lots” for Charity at the annual Martinis and Matisse event. Martinis and Matisse is a fundraiser with a name impossible to say if you’re not temperate with the former.

Clearwater, FL (January 2009) - On a swanky Saturday evening, the Clearwater Free Clinic held their annual fundraising soirée in the building of one of the largest privately held companies in the state—the FrankCrum building—which occupies an impressive 14-acre campus in downtown Clearwater.

“It’s the best event in Clearwater!” Dana Rizzuto of the Montage Gallery, proclaimed.

Local restaurants such as Bonefish Grill, Carrabba’s, Greektown Grille and E&E Steakout Grille donated food. Guests munched on fashionably small portions of chorizo-stuffed pork tenderloin, chicken marsala and taramosalata, a Greek style caviar as they mingled and enjoyed the open martini bars. They also admired art with titles like “Three at a Martini Party” and “Sandpipers on Clearwater Beach” and listened to a jazz band playing a soft and sophisticated rendition of “Girl from Ipanema.”

Frank Crum Jr. generously donated his building to host the event and has been doing so for the past two years. “It’s in Clearwater and supports a Clearwater function,” he says. “It was the right thing to do.”

David CopperfieldDo You Believe in Magic?
Interview with an Illusionist… By Megan Brazil

Clearwater FL December 31, 2008 - When I heard that David Copperfield was coming to town I got incredibly excited. My excitement was twofold, David is not only a magnificent illusionist (who I never miss a chance to see his show) but I have known him for years through my late brother Chappy Brazil who was also a magician and a friend of David Copperfield’s. So, when TBI asked me to do the interview with him, I jumped at the opportunity to give TBI readers insight into the mystical world of a magician.

The Interview

Megan: How has magic changed since you began as a magician, for you, and for the audience?

David Copperfield: “After so many years, it all comes down to loving what I do and keeping up with the times. Performing my show is something I constantly think about. When I am on the road and heading to my next venue, I think about my audience: ‘Is it a college town or a family town? Should I make the music LOUDER for College kids?’ New tricks are added, old ones are dropped... so it stays fresh. But it’s the randomly selected participants from the audience that make it fresh each and every show; which has also provided some of the best comic relief of the day!

Year after year, the St. Armands Circle Art Festival in Sarasota, FL makes the list of Sunshine Artist Magazine’s top art shows in the country.

Despite the sluggish economy and a tough retail environment, Howard Alan Events, the festival’s promoter, says that it has not deterred crowds from attending its art fairs around the U.S. and is optimistic about the success of the St. Armands Circle Art Festival. Howard Alan, president, comments, “In today’s economy, people are not buying a new car or taking a big vacation, but they are still treating themselves to art.  They may be more conservative in their buying habits, but they are still buying.” Alan elaborates, “Art is an investment that’s tangible. You can hang it on the wall and enjoy it as it appreciates in value, as opposed to a piece of paper that you file away in a drawer.”

FL State Fair 2009TAMPA, FL. - December 9, 2008.  Tampa has played host to professional football's big game before.  But this year, football's super event will be followed by a perennial fan favorite that's sure to be exciting  when it kicks off.  And it's always in Tampa, and always in February.

It's the 105th Florida State Fair.  Opening day is Thursday, February 5 and the fun and games run through Monday, February 16, 2009.  And this year, in keeping with the feeding frenzy that a super football game date brings to the Tampa Bay area, the theme of the 2009 Florida State Fair is Touchdown, Tampa Bay.

"Football, unlike any other sport, is arguably an American way of life, especially here in Florida, a state responsible for sending phenomenal talent to playing on Saturday and Sunday.  We thought the theme would be a perfect backdrop for the Fair," said Fair marketing director Vince Caruso. "Plus, I don't know of any annual event with more fun for the whole family for about the cost of a hot dog and a drink at any pro football game," added Caruso.
