Vitamins: The Good and the Bad

VitaminsThese days everyone is hunting for a bargain. But when it comes to vitamins, do you really know what you’re getting?

First, cheap vitamins are usually synthetic. Synthetic vitamins are made from coal tar derivatives and are much cheaper to produce than natural vitamins which come from food and other natural sources. There are mixed feelings about whether or not synthetic vitamins are as good as natural, but my personal opinion is that I want my vitamins to come from a food source, not a fuel source which is known to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing).

Adrenal GlandsSo, you think you know where your sexual hormones are produced?  If you think it’s your ovaries and testicles doing all of the work, you’re wrong.  Your adrenal glands are doing a lot of the work.  That’s right; those glands that help give you your energy are also the ones responsible for sex drive.  And that’s not all they are responsible for.

Thymus GlandWhen we hear about different glands in the body it is most frequent to hear about the thyroid and the adrenal glands. But there is a seldom-talked about gland that is protecting your body from infections, cancer and other diseases which is barely given any attention. It’s your thymus, and considering its function, it deserves more attention than it gets.

Peter Gillham's in Downtown ClearwaterMost of the articles I write are health-related information to help educate you, the reader, by giving you information you can use to help improve your quality of life. So many of you have called or come into the store to thank us for what we do. Today I would like to thank each and every one of you for everything YOU do. Because of all of you Peter Gillham’s has been experiencing expansion like never before. Each of you has helped to contribute by supporting a small local business run by local people, and we in turn give back as a store by contributing to and supporting local community groups, and as individuals by our many hours of volunteer work in numerous city and private groups which help to make our city a better place to live. Together we are achieving this.

Should You Vaccinate Your Child?

Should You Vaccinate Your Child? When my first daughter was born I did what was expected and got her immunized. Within 24 hours she began gasping for air and stopped breathing. Fortunately I was near her and able to get her breathing again with stimulation. The doctors told me that this happens occasionally and she should be fine. I never made a connection to the immunization. She had no incidents for the next three months until I took her to the doctor for her next set of shots. This time about 6 hours after the shot she gasped for air and stopped breathing again. Again, this time I was there to get her breathing again, and this time I made the connection between the two cases. I decided to find another pediatrician, who told me she was having an allergic reaction to the immunizations and to cease giving her shots. He also told me not to give any other children that came after her any shots and taught me how to protect my children to the best of my ability against childhood disease.

Peter Gillham's Nutrition Center in Downtown ClearwaterPeter Gillham’s has undergone some major renovations and changes in the last year and this month they are taking their biggest step – expanding into a natural foods store.

When current Executive Director Shelley Jaffe began working at the store nearly a year ago, she surveyed the store’s customers to see if they were getting all of the products they wanted. She also surveyed people who didn’t shop at the store to find out why and what they wanted as well. The results of these surveys have inspired the greatest expansion Peter Gillham’s has seen since he opened his original Clearwater store in 1979.

The Plain Facts About Alkalinity

Peter Gillham's Nutrition Center in Clearwater, FloridaThere are literally hundreds of books, blogs and information out there on alkalinity in the body. This has led to numerous supplements to help handle alkalinity and litmus paper manufacturers making a mint on strips to see how acid or alkaline your saliva is. But are these readings right and are you actually shutting down your digestive system by trying to handle acidity?

Peter Gillham's Nutrition Center in Downtown ClearwaterYour body is continually rebuilding itself, cell by cell, every single day. If it doesn’t get what it needs to build itself, it starts to break down and physical problems develop. So, what are the building blocks of the body and where do you get them from?

These building blocks are called amino acids. Your body makes a lot of them itself—as long as you are eating a good diet—but some of them your body can’t make. These are called essential amino acids and your body gets them from very specific foods. Below is a list of the eight essential amino acids and the foods they come from:

Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin

GillhamStore.jpgVitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin (meaning it is dissolved in fat) that is produced internally by the body when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the skin. There are two forms of vitamin D produced by living creatures: D-2 and D-3.  Vitamin D-2 is produced by invertebrates, fungus and plants. Vitamin D-3 is produced by human bodies.  Therefore vitamin D-3 is generally the most commonly recommended since it is the one our bodies produce.

It’s Your Body. Understand It!™

Peter Gillham's Nutrition CenterWhen most people think of hormones they think of the things that drive you crazy in your teens and for many their entire lives. But that’s really giving these guys a bad rap and doesn’t really tell you what they are all about. These little guys are the messengers. Different hormones carry different messages all over the body.

The endocrine system consists of different glands. Glands produce and release things, both inside and outside the body. Each gland in the endocrine system has a different job. The “master” is the pituitary gland.  It is the size of a pea and has several key jobs. It helps to control nervous function, controls the rest of the endocrine system and controls a few things directly having to do with childbirth and milk production. It’s definitely the boss.
